How to Apply For a Marriage License in California

California, the most populated state in the US, offers wedding sites from snowy Lake Tahoe to the great Redwood Forest to coastal paradise. No matter where in California you tie the knot, you ll need a marriage license within 90 days prior to the ceremony. Domestic partnership registration is available in San Francisco and Marin Counties.

Step1
Collect one picture ID, certified birth certificate and social security number for both the bride and groom.


Step2
Gather certified final divorce decrees if either or both parties have been married previously. Alternatively, a certificate of death of a previous spouse should be obtained.


Step3
Visit the Web site under the Resources section to find the location of the marriage license issuing office in the county where the ceremony will take place.


Step4
Call for an appointment at the office you wish to apply. Some locales regularly have a two hour wait to apply for a marriage license without an appointment.


Step5
Head to the county office with bride, groom, documentation (including premarital certificate) and $45 to $100 cash within 90 days of the ceremony.
